The side yard can be both a blessing and a curse. How can I landscape my side yard?
It gives you an extra little piece of property to work with, but what are you supposed to even do with this awkward, skinny space?
A little creativity is required to make the most out of this area. Here are a few ideas that should help you get started on transforming your side yard from a cumbersome spit of land you don’t know what to do with into one of your favorite features of your home:
Plant A Garden
Summer is here – you have just enough time to build some raised beds in your side yard and grow some tomatoes, cucumbers, and the many other delicious fruits and veggies that thrive in warm weather. Food doesn’t get fresher (or more affordable) than that.
Set Up A Secluded Morning Coffee Spot
Another thing to consider about summer is that, here in San Diego, you won’t get much of a chance to enjoy any comfortable weather.
One chance you will get, though, is the early hours of the morning, before the sun has had much time to turn up the heat. If you’re lucky enough to have some trees giving shade to your side yard, it’d make an excellent place to set up a little café table for coffee in the (relatively) cool mornings. You could even establish some screening plants such as bamboo for more privacy.
Add A Water Feature
Water features such as ponds and fountains can be quite large, so it can be difficult to find a spot for them without disrupting the flow of your yard.
Often, the side yard is the perfect solution in this scenario, as it provides sufficient room for a feature and is out of the way enough to give the rest of your yard more potential uses.
If your particular side yard serves as a well-trod path from the driveway to the back deck, surely the grass is looking pretty rough there. Why bother with grass at all in this situation?
Pavers hold up much better to foot traffic, and they’re available in a wide variety of colors and designs, so there won’t be a problem finding a solution that fits your style and personality.
These are just a few of the ideas for creating and landscaping a special place that would otherwise go unused.
