Finding the Best Place for Your Water Feature

avoid uneven groundYou know you want a water feature, but you may be struggling to find the perfect place for one in your yard. How do you find the best place for your water feature?

While the intricacies of water feature placement are best handled by professional landscapers, there are some general guidelines that anyone can use to help find the right location for a pool, pond or fountain.

Where to Put Your Pond

If you are installing a pond, avoid putting this water feature on or near the following spots:

  • Uneven ground
  • Ground with poor drainage
  • Underground pipes
  • Sewer lines
  • Septic fields
  • Cable/electrical wiring

Also, consider placing your pond away from large trees. Falling leaves and needles lead to all sorts of problems including the growth of bacteria (from dead leaves collecting in the bottom of the pond) and clogs in the filtration and pump systems. Plus, it will save you the hassle of constantly cleaning up those leaves! If you can’t avoid the trees, consider using a screen to help keep the leaves out.

Sunlight’s Role

It is important to consider sunlight when planning a water feature. The amount of sun you need depends on what you’re planning to do with your pond. If nurturing aquatic plants is your main pond priority, then you need lots of sunlight (although some plants, like water lilies, actually prefer partial shade). If you want fish in your pond, consider a location with adequate shade.

Partial shade is also recommended for smaller ponds, as it brings the water temperature down and controls evaporation and algae growth.

Wires and Hoses

If you are installing a fountain, you will need to situate it so that electrical wiring can be run directly from your house.

Also, place the pond near a hose so that you can add water as needed. This is especially important with smaller ponds, as they tend to dry up during the hot summer months.
